Check out New Perspectives Course on Global Missions!

Hey, family!

We want to share an opportunity for you to get a fresh vision and passion for the global mission field! Starting on January 8th, a new weekly Perspectives class will launch in Chula Vista that will explore God's heart of the nations through Scripture and stories from the mission field.

We're part of a gospel story that's far bigger than what's happening here in San Diego, and if you've ever thought about global missions or just want to learn and be encouraged by what God is doing around the world to bring people to Himself, this class is for you!

If you're interested in signing up, please visit their website HERE

Classes run from January 8th through March 19th and will be held weekly on Mondays from 6:30p-9:30p and on four Friday nights. Check out the website for more details!

Going Back to Go Forward Exercises!

Hey, Everyone!

This Sunday, Andy taught about how the past shapes us and how Jesus can change how our past impacts us (sermon link).  We want to share two exercises below adapted from the Emotionally Healthy Church workbook to help you identify the "commandments" your family of origin lived by and discover the new way of life Jesus offers us in the gospel. We're praying that God would use this to help us live out the freedom we have as members of His family!

Exercise 1: "Ten Commandments" of Our Family of Origin
Growing up, each one of our families operated under a set of "commandments." Some of them were spoken and spelled out; others were unspoken and "understood." Take some time to jot down any rules, attitudes, and underlying assumptions your family had in the areas listed below - spoken or unspoken.  Share one with a friend or spouse, and tell how it continues to influence you today.

Examples:

  • Money: "It's okay to spend it on others, but not on yourself."
  • Success: "It's getting into the best schools."
  • Expressing Anger: "When you are angry, it is a sin."
  • Loss and Grief: "You are not allowed to be sad or depressed."

Ten Commandments of My Family of Origin

  1. Money:___________________________________________________
  2. Success: _________________________________________________
  3. God: ____________________________________________________
  4. Gender Roles: ____________________________________________
  5. Marriage: ________________________________________________
  6. Complementing/Praising: __________________________________
  7. Sex: ____________________________________________________
  8. Play and Recreation: _______________________________________
  9. Expressing Anger: _________________________________________
  10. Loss and Grief: ____________________________________________

Exercise 2: The New Commands of our New Family
Our family of origin is the single most powerful and formative influence that has shaped the person we are today. Therefore it makes sense that Christian discipleship is ultimately about transplanting someone from their family of origin and rooting them into the new family of Christ.  Just as there are established ways of handling anger, money, conflict, sex, feelings, and the like, in our family of origin, so there are new ways of thinking and acting about these things in the family of God.  Discipleship is a process of unlearning and relearning, because through Christ, we've been birthed into a new family tree.

Take a few minutes to write out the gospel version of your family's commandments. In other words, if the gospel is true, how does it free you to live out your new identity as a member of God's family in these areas?

Example:

  • Money: "My security is found in God's love and care for me, so I don't have to live for money. Instead, I can enjoy it and use it to bless others."

  1. Money:___________________________________________________
  2. Success: _________________________________________________
  3. God: ____________________________________________________
  4. Gender Roles: _____________________________________________
  5. Marriage: _________________________________________________
  6. Complementing/Praising: __________________________________
  7. Sex: _____________________________________________________
  8. Play and Recreation: _______________________________________
  9. Expressing Anger: _________________________________________
  10. Loss and Grief: ____________________________________________

We hope you enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday and we'll see you this Sunday as Andy explores what it looks like to understand your limits in order to love well.

Tools to Help You Look Beneath the Surface

Life Abundant.png

Hey, Everyone!

We recently started a series on emotional and spiritual maturity called, "Life Abundant." This past Sunday, Andy preached a message about looking beneath the surface (sermon link) and we want to share three exercises adapted from the Emotionally Healthy Church book to help us process and apply what we're learning. Ready? Let's dive in!

Exercise 1: Finding the Patterns
Patterns in our lives and relationships are often a sign that we're acting out from deep places in our "iceberg," or parts of our lives that are often unseen and unknown to us. They usually reveal a "bug" in our emotional programming, something that plays out over and over again in our lives.  If you or a close loved one notice a "pattern of unhealth" emerging in your life, that is usually a good sign that something's amiss in your internal wiring.

To help find your patterns, fill in the blanks below:

  1. "Most of the time, I feel as if I am ____." (e.g. invisible, unimportant, failing, guilty)
  2. "What often happens to me in relationships is ________." (e.g. people leave me, take advantage of me, betray me)
  3. "Why do others at work or school or church keep on _____me?" (e.g. ignoring, expecting unrealistic things of, criticizing)
  4. "When I am under stress, I often find myself _______." (e.g. fighting, angry, medicating myself, blaming others, losing myself in an unhealthy way)
  5. "When I think about the future, I feel _____." (e.g. depressed, anxious, lost, unsure)

Exercise 2: Asking the "Why" Questions
It takes the grace of God to get at the bottom of our iceberg.  Thankfully, there are "disciplines of reflection" to help us walk in that grace. One of these is the "Why?" or "What's going on?" question.  As we notice patterns in our feelings, situations, and relationships that emerge in our lives, God desires that we ask ourselves the "Why?" question in the safety of His presence.

Some questions to help you figure out, "What's Going On?"
Think about a recent situation in which you have felt some anger, frustration, fear, shame, bitterness, hate, grief, or jealousy.  Use the questions below as a starting point to get at "What's going on?"

  • Rage/anger: "How was I hurt?"
  • Frustration: "What did I feel helpless about?"
  • Shame: "What was I hiding?"
  • Resentment: "What did I expect or hope for?"
  • Depression: "What did I lose?"
  • Jealousy: "Where did I feel inadequate?"

Exercise 3: Seeing Your Blind Spot
Think of a person in your life who loves Jesus, knows you well, and loves you. Invite them to speak into your life by sharing what they see in you.  Ask them to share strengths you have that you're not aware of and also share honestly about some weakness or sin issues that you might not see.

We're praying that the Spirit would give us greater self-awareness that leads to a deeper love of God and others through the transforming power of the gospel!

It’s been an incredible ride and we’re excited to invite you to celebrate with us on Sunday, October 8th.  We’ve got a great night planned with dinner, drinks, and stories from 6:00p-8:00p and a legit DJ and dancing from 8:00p-10:00p

Because of the significant cost of putting on this event we will have a cover charge of $20/person. However, we don't want anyone to miss this because of the cost, so if you can't pay for it, we want you to come anyway! Just email nicole@restoredsd.com and we'll cover the costs for you.

Also, we won't have childcare for the party, but kids are welcome.  This is like bringing your children to a wedding so please use your discretion and we strongly encourage you to get childcare if your children are under 4 years old.

Please RSVP HERE to register and pay!

Here are the full event details:
